Youth Wins WLV Yacht Club Regatta

The Westlake Yacht Club sailing team junior division visited Dana Point in recent times to take part in North America Tera Championship. On 4th and 5th of August, the sailing competition was held in Open Ocean with wind conditions being moderate to good and light winds followed the next day. The team of Westlake included 4 juniors and sailed brilliantly against the strongest sailors from the West. Around 3 qualifying races were hosted on 4th August to segregate the participants into Silver and Gold fleets. These 2 fleets took part in 5 races next day so as to conclude the champion. It was indeed a great event and sailors did their best to win.

As far as the winner is concerned, Emily Rychlik, from Medea Creek Middle School based in Oak Park was the champion of the overall regatta. She is just in her 6th grade and became the winner of Gold Fleet. She played well and achieved 1st place in all 5 races the next day by beating close to 30 sailors belonging to 10 different yacht clubs from Colorado and Southern California.

Rachael Koscelnik from Agoura High School bagged 3rd place in Silver Feet. Danika, sister of Rachel from Lindero Canyon Middle School came 4th. The 12 the place in the Silver Feet was achieved by Lauren from AHS. As the Tera is dinghy measuring 9 feet and 5 inch mainly used during summer by the yacht club in its Summer Sailing Academy. There were around 130 youngsters in this season from Conejo Valley from the age group of 8 to 18 who practiced sailing in the Tera. There is the 8 one-week session made available for students who live in the community and there are boats available to train youths. Also, these boats are used for racing in local regattas that lead to world championships.
